CURRENT TITLE: Upon her retirement from East Tennessee State University, Dr. Joy was awarded the status of Professor Emeritus.

 

SPECIAL NOTE: After 41 years of teaching, Dr. Joy decided to fully retire and devote her energies to the continuing editorship of Storytelling World, to the directorship of the Annual Storytelling Resource Awards, to presenting her own brand of storytelling seminars and workshops, and to her own personal story writing and telling.  “It’s a storyteller’s DREAM,” she reports.

VITA SUMMARY

Dr. Flora Joy graduated with honors (B.S.) and began teaching at age 18 (two years after high school graduation). [She still holds the record for being ETSU’s youngest graduate.] Four years later she received Master’s Degree in Reading (M.A.) and was selected Teacher of the Year for the State of Tennessee. She taught full-time from 1963-2000—from elementary through college levels, and in 2000 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Storytelling Network. From August of 2000 through May of 2004 she served as a Senior Faculty Affiliate in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and then segued into full retirement from teaching in May of 2004.

Note: During Flora's terms as President of the Tennessee Association for the Preservation and Perpetuation of Storytelling (TAPPS), she became the editor of a new TAPPS-sponsored storytelling journal for its members. Joy, Flora C., Teaching Machines and Programmed Learning. Prepared script and was Guest Authority in a thirty-minute educational film produced by the Maryland State Department of Education (Baltimore, Maryland). This nationally-released film was one of a series of twenty-two films prepared for teacher-inservice credit or for university course credit in the area of adult education.
